August 27, 2020

He was born on October 2, 1934, in Wheeling, West Virginia, son of Stratos G. and Elene S. (Saterides). He is survived by his daughter Elene Ashe, son Alex Rodetis, and granddaughter Athena Ashe.

He taught art history for the Sonoma State University Art Department since 1981, retiring recently. His specialities included Greek art, icons, and medieval and European art. His dissertation was on Eugene Delacroix. Until recently he led many group trips abroad to view art in Greece and its islands, Turkey, Cyprus, Sicily, Italy, Spain, France, England, and the Netherlands. He was also an expert on opera.

George was an artist and a writer: text and art in The Accursed Soul of John Kakourgos, 2011; Delacroix and Shakespeare: A Struggle between Form and the Imagination, 1986; and “El Greco’s Statements on Michelangelo the Painter,” 1998. He gave specialist lectures on Byzantine art, El Greco, Delacroix, and other topics.

His wish was for cremation, with no memorial, and ashes to be scattered in Greece.
